The Indian Land Warrior golf team downed rivals Buford High 166 to 175 at Regent Park Golf Club March 20.
The Warriors rode the hot playing of #2 golfer Jared Long, who was medalist with a 37. Also helpful to the cause was the season-best 41 contributed by George Morris.
The match was close throughout. Indian Land opened up a lead near the end when its top four golfers all had their scores in the low four. But Buford rallied when their #6 golfer, Cannon Cato, fired a 46, beating his opposite number by 12 shots, and besting the fifth-best Yellow Jacket score by six.
The results have Coach Doug Young getting excited about the year.
“Shooting 166 for nine holes (four players) is pretty good, especially this early,” coach Young said. “Each of our players is showing improvement. At this rate, when the Regional Tournament comes in early May, we’ll certainly have to be considered one of the serious contenders for the two team spots in the State Tournament.”
The golfers have been helped tremendously by the unseasonably warm weather, and the condition of host Regent Park Golf Club.
“I hope this weather continues; the players are getting lots of good playing and practice time,” coach Young said. “It can only be of help to us.”
Indian Land is now 2-1 in match play. Regional rivals Andrew Jackson High (Kershaw) come to Regent Park March 29.
