“We’re so proud of our team”

A team of three Lancaster County School District cafeteria managers won the S.C. Nutrition Association Chopped Contest at Myrtle Beach Oct. 20.

     •     The team members – Hally Adams, Buford High; Jessica Ayers, South Middle; and Rhodica Harris, Van Wyck Elementary – beat teams from Greenville County, Greenwood and Williamsburg to take the top chef title.

     •     “We’re so proud of our team,” food services director Angela McCrorey said. “This is the first time any district has beaten Greenville County – and Greenville had two professional chefs on its team. Our winning says a lot about the creativity and food knowledge our school cafeteria managers have.”

     •     Since the contest was sponsored by Wild Blueberries Company and Gordon Food Service, the teams had to use blueberries in the meals they prepared. Each team’s meal had to include an entrée, a side dish and a dessert.

     •     Lancaster’s team prepared a BBQ quesadilla made of a sautéed vegetable with ketchup and brown sugar sauce topped with a blueberry barbeque sauce; a side of spinach, vegetable and fruit salad including blueberries with dressing; and a dessert of stewed apples with brown sugar and apple juice with pears and topped with yogurt lemon zest and blueberry compote.
