The Indian Land Lady Warrior Tennis Team defeated the Lady Raiders of W. J. Keenan High in Columbia 6 – 0 in the first round of the Class AA playoffs Oct. 28.
The win is the first-ever playoff victory for the Lady Warrior Tennis Team. The win also means the team advances to play against last year’s Upper State Champions for AA, Emerald High of Greenwood. That match will be played in Indian Land on Tuesday, Nov. 2.
Coach Young was effusive about the team and the victory.
“We had four matches that weren’t even close. And of the two that were close, in each case, our player elevated her game at just the right moment to pull out the result she needed,” Coach Young said. “We were playing some of the best tennis we have played all season.”
The top players for Keenan played well, Coach Young noted.
“They hit the ball side-to-side well, moving their opponents around. They also do fantastic at getting balls back on the run,” Coach Young said. “To beat them, we had to be patient and play solid tennis. Being a human backboard wasn’t enough tonight.”
The #1 match between Shoemaker and Benjamin was a classic example. In both sets, Shoemaker had to come from deficits, winning three straight to close each set out.
The match between Koenig and West was also close in the first set, with Koenig coming from down 6-3 in the tiebreaker to win 8-6.
“When their backs are to a wall, our girls play their best,” Coach Young said.
The team is looking forward to the Tuesday match, which promises to be much tougher, Coach Young said.
“We’ve played several 3-A and 4-A teams this year,” Coach Young said. “I’m counting on those tough matches to see us through the challenge of Emerald.”
The time of the match Tuesday will be announced. It will be played at the Sun City Tennis Facility, which Sun City allows Indian Land High to use for its home matches.
