Andrew Jackson High’s Men’s Golf Team finished second, and Indian Land High’s Men’s Golf Team finished third in this year’s Region IV-AA Pre-season Tournament in Pageland.
First place went to perennial Region champions Pageland Central High.
Down nine strokes after Day 1, the Volunteers staged a strong comeback on Day 2, only to fall two strokes short of overcoming the strong host Eagles.
Indian Land started strong on Monday, with number one player Clay Holcomb shooting a personal competition best 39. Jared Long was right on his heels with a 40 and George Morris fired a 42. Returning senior Jalen Burrell eked out a 46 to round out the team’s total.
These performances left the Warriors only two strokes behind the Volunteers.
Day 2 started with a blow to Indian Land’s hopes when Holcomb injured his wrist on the second hole of play and had to withdraw.
The rest of the team picked up the slack, with Burrell improving four strokes to a 42, joining Long’s 41 and Morris’ second straight 42. Newcomer Sophomore Michael Flanders rounded out the scoring with a 50.
The team was happy with the result, especially since it was 6 strokes better than rival Buford High, Indian Land coach Doug Young said.
Young, noted that the result was a definite improvement over early-season results last season.
“Last year, the early results were poor. We were lucky to place more than one player under 45. This year, the players are dedicated to doing better, spending more time practicing, and approaching the game with a more serious attitude.” Coach Young said. “They want to make a run at winning the Region, and they know to do that, they have to get by a very good Central High team, and that won’t happen without some hard work on our part. This tournament certainly serves notice to the Eagles that we can’t be dismissed as unimportant.”
The Indian Land Warriors open their season March 12 at Great Falls. The first Warrior home match is at 4:30 p.m., March 15 at this season’s new host course, Regent Park Golf Club in Fort Mill.
