“Tonight, in their first ever matchup, the Indian Land Lady Warriors found a new rival in the Lady Cavaliers of Cuthbertson High,” Coach Doug Young said.  “Separated by just a few miles, and a state border, we’re both AA schools by size.  To judge from the tennis played, our similar sizes are matched by our similar desires to win the close ones.”

Cuthbertson came into the match having not played any matches.  Their league schedule starts Thursday, 9/9, so this was their one and only warmup chance.  The Lady Warriors came into the match 0 – 1, their only previous match a close loss to Rock Hill High School, a AAA team.  Because the teams had never met, they weren’t exactly sure what to expect, Coach Young said.

The tone of the match was visible in the #3 and #4 singles matches, played side-by-side.

Indian Land’s #3, Kim Koenig, outlasted her opponent, forcing a match tie-breaker that she came from behind to win 10 – 8.

Next door, the Cuthbertson #4 held on to win despite a determined rally by Indian Land’s April Ciccone.

The teams also split the top end of the singles matches, with Hannah Shoemaker coming from behind to win her match in a match tie-breaker 10 – 5, while the Cuthbertson #2 won.

Cuthbertson’s #5 player outlasted Bridget Sampson to give Cuthbertson the edge going into the doubles matches.

In the doubles matchups, the most interesting match was between the #2 teams.

Alexandra Greenawalt and Kelly Pauls of Indian Land lost the first set, but came back to win the second set.

With all the teams looking on, Greenawalt and Pauls almost managed a match tie-breaking win, finally going down 13 – 15.  This loss handed the overall match to Cuthbertson.

“We enjoyed the spirit and the manners of the Lady Cavs,” Coach Young said. “The tennis played argues that a new rivalry has been found.”

The Lady Warriors play Sept. 9 at Rock Hill High at 5 pm.  The Lady Warriors’ next home match is Sept. 16 against Nation Ford High.
