Lancaster County School District was named 2020 Charter School Authorizer of the Year.
Presented by the SC Public Charter School Alliance, the South Carolina Public Charter Sponsor of the Year Award recognizes a sponsor that has an exemplary record of service, whose schools have become successful through their active involvement and support within the charter school movement in South Carolina.
Discovery School’s Tom McDuffie nominated the district.
Nomination questions include “Why do you believe this district/IHE should be selected as the 2020 South Carolina Charter School Sponsor of the Year?”, “Why do you believe this district/IHE has an exemplary record of service?”, “How has this district/IHE’s charter schools have become successful through their active involvement and support within the charter school movement?”
Here are some of the words Mr. McDuffie used in his nomination of Lancaster County School District:
“For over 20 years, the Lancaster County School District and its Board of Trustees has supported the mission and vision of Discovery School in a variety of ways. Our sponsor has always made certain that we had the financial security to remain open by ensuring that our employees are paid on a stable basis and that allotments from the state are accessible on a timely basis. They have provided and maintained a school facility that has served us well at minimal cost (which has not increased in over 20 years). We have been included in professional development activities and have been provided with additional resources when needed. Discovery School has been included in decision-making opportunities that affect adoption of instructional materials and our faculty and staff have been treated as partners in education instead of being considered as “competitors”. “
